What Do You Want To Do?
I love the movie Good Will Hunting. In fact, I like any movie which starts with a likable but broken character who faces a huge life challenge. In the end, they break through by overcoming themselves. They achieve a sort of salvation.
Pure Genius
Robin Williams plays a psychiatrist who asks Will Hunting, “What do you want to do?”Will Hunting is a genius who had a horrible childhood of emotional and physical abuse. The movie opens with him solving a math problem no one at MIT can solve. He solves it in minutes. In preparation for his meeting with court-ordered psychiatrists, he reads their books and turns these poor guys on their heads. Will is incredibly intelligent, articulate, and very broken. Here is Will Hunting. He has the intellect to intimidate the smartest Harvard and MIT students and professors these institutions have to offer. But he can’t answer the question, “What do you want to do?”
Become Unstoppable
Years ago, my friend Regi Campbell said to me, “If you ever figure out what you want to do, you will be unstoppable. You will have an amazing impact on the world.”I never forgot what he told me. In fact, whenever I find myself just painting life by numbers, I reflect back on that conversation. I ask, “Am I doing what I am supposed to be doing? Am I doing what God designed me to do?”I talked to a friend the other day who is an incredibly successful businessman. But his passion isn’t business. It’s politics. He has always loved politics. He isn’t in politics, but he can engage in any conversation at any level on any political issue.
The Question
In our conversation that day, I told him about a man I mentor who is currently running for political office. When he heard this, he admitted, “I always wanted to run for Governor of Georgia.”There is the answer to the question, “What do you want to do?”My friend Regi sees something in me. He is one of those people who is often wrong but never in doubt. But this time I know he is right. There is something in me that is afraid to say out loud what I want to do. If I say it out loud, then I’ll have to do it.What do you want to do?
